ABOUT THE AUTHORS...Co-editors Luther A. Douglas and his wife, Conda Elizabeth- better known as Doug and Betsy- snowshoe near their home in Sun Valley, Idaho. Here, during the ski and summer seasons, they operate their shop, America House, devoted to marketing American arts and crafts. In the off seasons, they travel to the Southwest, where Doug works with Navajo medicine men in the recording and preserving of Navajo sand-painting ceremonials, primarily for museums- a life long study which has brought him international recognition.
Popular in Europe and the United States as lecturers on Indian culture and history, the Douglases are also at present preparing for publication a book on sandpainting.
Doug’s membership as a Fellow of The Explorers Club, Betsy’s interest in cooking, and their world-wide circle of explorer friends led to their collaboration on the Explorers Cookbook under the auspices of The Explorers Club and Special Projects Officer Ward Randol.

ABOUT THE EXPLORERS CLUB...
THE EXPLORERS CLUB, founded in 1904 and incorporated in 1905, is an institution of serious purpose designed for and dedicated to the search for new knowledge of the earth and outer space. To this end the Club serves as an international focal point and catalyst in the identification and stimulation of institutional exploration and the independent investigator alike. The resources of the Club are particularly well suited to fostering both scientific field research and education programs. The Exploration Fund was established several years ago for the specific purpose of supporting field work; the headquarters building in New York City provides facilities for instructional activities. Extensive reference material is available in the library (including a rare book collection) and map collection. Meeting, study, and seminar rooms are used in the furtherance of the educational programs of the Club. Five regional groups (Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Los Angeles, and Juneau) are active in promoting interest and support of the Club’s programs. Accomplishments achieved through the Club and its membership —can be highlighted by the heroic exploits of many of the members whose names have become legendary throughout the world. However outstanding and acclaimed as these personal achievements have been in the annals of exploration, the Club’s real strength must be shared by the more than 1,700 members who continue to contribute in the constructive role of the explorer.
The official expedition flag was adopted by The Explorers Club in 1925. It displays between corners of red and blue for courage and fidelity a broad white diagonal band with the initials of The Explorers Club and a compass rose symbolic of the Club’s world-wide interests.
Designation of an expedition as a Flag expedition is approved by the Flag Committee only after thorough investigation, and the custody of the flag is one of the principal honors conferred by The Explorers Club on its members.
Since adoption all expedition flags have been numbered... 195 to date, and each has been carried on numerous journeys, the records of which constitute a chronicle of the most important achievements in twentieth century exploration.
